Movie Review- Transcendence (2014)

(May be some spoilers below!)

For some reason I hadn’t heard of this film until sTranscendence2014Postereeing it available on NowTV. Starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall and Paul Bettany it investigates the ethics of two technologies which have the potential to be of great benefit and/or great harm to the human race as a whole. The technologies I’m referring to are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and nanotechnology.

Although containing a good share of action, it is by no means a violent film but errs on the side of being thoughtful. I had expected that Johnny Depp’s character, Will, would succumb to potential of power that AI & nanotech afforded him but it didn’t end up that predictable.

I liked that the conflict between humans having free will and suffering versus being practically immortal but losing some of their freedom/identity in the process. This is a theme touched on in a number of films including “I, Robot” (2004).

Overall, I enjoyed the story-line, and thought the use of some stellar actors was made good use of. However, in the middle I did find it a little too slow and clunky but I guess this is inevitable when you have the film made up of two periods in time separated by comparative peace.

The ending is by no means straightforward (as is the debate for and against these technologies) but leaves the viewer thinking what they would have preferred the outcome to be.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5
